Preventing infections
Infections can be an unpleasant side effect of chemotherapy and we prefer to prevent them rather than treat them. The best way to prevent infections is good handwashing. It does not need to be very frequent, but always before eating and after using the toilet.
At the Máxima Center everyone who works or visits must disinfect their hands. Dispensers are available throughout the building. Children with a contagious illness are cared for in isolation so they cannot infect other children.
Some types of chemotherapy increase the chance of infections. If your child receives these medicines, we give extra antibiotics. When your child goes home, you will receive guidelines to help prevent infections.
