Pathology: solid tumors, lymphomas, and brain tumors

The Pathology team (responsible staff member Marijn Scheijde-Vermeulen) is the primary point of contact for the diagnostics of all biopsies and resections. Additional testing on tissue, including immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, and molecular diagnostics, is also performed by the LKO. Cytology specimens are processed for diagnostic purposes, and, with consent, residual material may be released for research purposes.

Autopsies

An autopsy, also referred to as a postmortem examination, is performed to determine the cause of death or to answer specific questions about the circumstances surrounding death. An autopsy is carried out by a pathologist, assisted by mortuary staff. An autopsy is only performed with the consent of the family of the deceased.

The autopsy takes place at UMC Utrecht and is performed by a UMC Utrecht pathologist, often in the presence of a pathologist from the Princess Máxima Center.

Reviews and consultations

Material may be submitted for consultation or sent for review. Specimens may be submitted either fixed, slides or tissue blocks, or unfixed, fresh or frozen. If unfixed material is to be shipped, you must always contact the on-call pathologist in advance.
